A member of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee has commented that the joint naval drill of Iran and Russia, which was held in the Caspian Sea on Wednesday, indicated that the littoral states are trying to rely on their capabilities to maintain the security of the region and there is no need for the presence of non-regional forces. “Some Caspian Sea littoral states had sought in the past to set the stage for the entrance of extra-regional countries into the region,” MP Ahmad Shouhani said in an interview with ICANA on Friday. The two Russian warships, which took part in the exercise, had docked at the Caspian Sea port of Anzali in northern Iran on Monday and left Iran for Azerbaijan on Wednesday.
