Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said the upcoming Majlis and Assembly of Expert elections will be held electronically in nine provinces.
The Interior Ministry is preparing the grounds for electronic counting of the votes, he said in a press conference on Thursday.
“In the previous election [presidential elections of 2013], 90% of the process was implemented electronically,” Fazli said.
The next Majlis and Assembly of Experts elections are scheduled to take place simultaneously on February 26, 2016.
Electronic conduct of the elections needs both computer hardware and software. On the hardware, the ministry has reached a consensus with the Guardian Council and on the software, “we are still negotiating,” but the council will likely approve the ministry’s proposal, he said.
On the advantages of electronic elections, he said it helps in announcing the results in just half a day. Besides, speed and accuracy in the process of counting votes allows for more reliable results, the minister said.
As per the law, candidates will be allowed to hold meetings and advertise in their election campaigns, he added.
