A ceremony is to be held today in Tehran to mark the upcoming 70th anniversary of the United Nations (October 24), Fars News Agency reported.
UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson and Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi will attend the ceremony. UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, the United Nations officially came into being.
“The 70th anniversary of the United Nations… is an opportunity to spotlight where the UN… needs to redouble its efforts to meet current and future challenges across the three pillars of its work: peace and security, development, and human rights,” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a recent message.
