The Leader of the Islamic Revolution issued a message offering condolences over the martyrdom of Lieutenant General Hossein Hamedani, a senior Islamic Revolution Guards Corps commander, who was killed while advising the Syrian army on Thursday.

“The devoted veteran soldier spent his youth fighting at war fronts to defend the honor of his homeland and the Islamic Republic system,” IRNA quoted Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei as saying in the message.

According to ISNA, the body of the top commander arrived in Tehran on Friday.

His funeral procession will be held in Tehran today and in his hometown Hamdan tomorrow, where he will be buried.

The IRGC said Hamedani was killed by the so-called Islamic State terrorist group on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Aleppo.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since March 2011. Around 250,000 people have lost their lives and millions have been displaced due to the conflict.

Iran has been providing Syria with military advice to assist the Arab country in its anti-terror campaign.
