UN Seeks Help on Region

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Iran is a key player in the Middle East and UN special envoys are seeking to enlist the help of Iranian officials in finding political solutions to the ongoing crises gripping the region.  In a recent interview with the London-based newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, Ban said, “The nuclear deal between Iran and major powers was a diplomatic achievement which will hopefully pave the way for making further progress in resolving the Syria crisis as well as other major regional conflicts,” ISNA reported on Saturday. Regarding reports of Russia’s military presence in Syria, he noted that military measures are not a solution to the existing problems and will exacerbate the situation, stressing, “Our major concern is the groups which are arming militants.”
