Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has issued a decree appointing new members to the Supreme Council of Cyberspace.  

The members will take office for a four-year term.   

Ayatollah Khamenei stressed the important role of the council in policymaking, macro management and planning as well as effective and up-to-date monitoring related to cyberspace, local technology website ICTNA reported.  

"Given the sophisticated and rapid developments in this area and the true needs of our country, the members must prepare themselves to bear an important responsibility during their four-year term," he said in the written statement.

The SCC was established three years ago. Along with its parent organization, the National Center for Cyberspace, it has played a crucial and authoritative role in countering cyber threats and exploiting productive potentials in the field.  

The council comprises 16 legal and eight real members.

President Hassan Rouhani has been selected as the head of the council, while top-ranking legal experts include Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, Judiciary Chief Sadeq Amoli Larijani and Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mahmoud Vaezi.  

Ayatollah Khamenei also outlined the 10 main obligations of the council members in the decree.  

Accelerating the development of a national data network, protecting the privacy of Internet users and ensuring users' online security have been emphasized.  Council members have been urged to help boost the country's ranking in the field of cyber technology. Related collaboration with foreign countries has also been highlighted.

Improving working conditions for cyber-technological businesses, boosting content development and increasing the share of science-based economy are also underscored.
