Two Russian warships docked at the Caspian Sea port of Anzali in northern Iran on Monday morning and were welcomed by Iranian officials and Russian envoys.
Levan Dzhagaryan, Russia’s ambassador to Tehran, said, “This is the second visit of a Russian fleet to Iran.”
The Russian envoy also called for boosting mutual ties between Tehran and Moscow “in various fields,” IRNA reported.
The Russian consul general in the northern city of Rasht, Maxim Baranov, also said the port call is in line with Moscow’s policy to expand economic, political and military cooperation with Tehran.
He added, “Moscow believes the Caspian Sea issues should be resolved among the littoral states themselves and without interference of other countries.”
Rear Admiral Afshin Rezaei Haddad, the commander of the Navy’s Fourth Zone, also met with the commander of the Russian fleet.
The fleet carrying massage of “peace and friendship” will leave the Iranian port for Azerbaijan on October 15.
Last month leaders of the five Caspian states -- Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan -- met in the Russian city of Astrakhan. They all agreed to prevent the presence of foreign military forces in the land-locked sea.
