US Representative José E. Serrano said he will vote in support of President Barack Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran, adding to the thin ranks of New York City Democrats who have backed the agreement.

The US Congress is set to vote next month whether to reject the accord.

Serrano said in a statement on Friday the deal was “the most sensible and viable way” to curb Iran’s nuclear activities, which Tehran says are totally for peaceful purposes.

“I firmly believe that the comprehensive oversight and restrictions put in place by this agreement will put the United States, and our allies, in the best position to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,” the New York Times quoted Serrano as saying.  Iran denies its nuclear program may have any military objectives.
