A simulated United Nations Security Council session was held in Tehran on Thursday, where the deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs delivered a speech.

Abbas Araqchi told the event, jointly organized by the quarterly International Studies Journal and the UN Information Centre in Tehran, that such meetings can help promote a better understanding of the role of the United Nations Security Council.

"One of the serious challenges facing our foreign policy is lack of a correct understanding about international relations issues, especially the workings of the UN Security Council."

Araqchi said there are "various and conflicting views" of the Security Council, which sometimes lead to adoption of incorrect policies with regard to the UN body.

"Some people tend to think of the council as a court of justice which is supposed to hold a balanced approach. But this is a great mistake because it is a political body which takes political decisions aligned with the interests of permanent members," IRNA on Saturday quoted him as saying. Another "big" misunderstanding is that the council is under "absolute" control of the US and the West, Araqchi said in the session, which was attended by United Nations Resident Coordinator Gary Lewis.
