The secretary general of the conservative Islamic Coalition Party said reformist candidates will be the main rivals for principlists in the Feb 26, 2016 parliamentary election.

Mohammad Nabi Habibi asserted former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s connection with the principlist camp was the main cause of the grouping’s failure in the 2013 presidential election, referring to widespread criticisms about Ahmadinejad’s performance during his two terms in office.

He noted that the low-key presence of reformist candidates in the previous parliamentary poll was   the prime cause of the sweeping victory of principlists, IRNA reported.

“However, the previous conditions do not exist for the next round of the Majlis election,” he noted, adding that unless the principlist camp arrives at a consensus, it will lose the election.
