The first major congress of the new pro-reform Unity of the Nation of Islamic Iran Party was held in Tehran on Thursday.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including former vice president Mohammad Reza Aref, former Tehran mayor and current leader of the Executives of Construction Party Gholamhossein Karbaschi, Vice President for Women and Family Affairs Shahindokht Molaverdi, former minister of higher education Mostafa Moeen and well-known journalist Mohammad Ghouchani, IRNA reported.
In a vote during the meeting, Ali Shakourirad was elected as secretary general of the political group and 30 members of the party's central council were chosen.
Shakourirad said, "The party will use the experience of all former (reformist) parties to achieve its objectives," noting that reformists want those in power to be "accountable" for their actions and the people to be able to determine their own fate.
"Reformists are trying to create a bright future for the youth and a stable situation for the whole society," he noted.
