Russian Ambassador in Tehran called for enhanced bilateral ties, stressing improved political and economic relations between Iran and Russia could help promote peace and stability in the Middle East.

Levan Dzhagaryan made the statement in a meeting with Chairman of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi on Sunday, ICANA reported.

The envoy said exchange of political and parliamentary delegations between Iran and Russia is an indication of the two governments' resolve to develop ties in various fields.

The Iranian lawmaker noted that expansion of relations is of "strategic" significance and said, "The two sides' common stance on most of regional and international issues provides a great opportunity for increasing cooperation in line with the interests of the two nations."

Turning to the latest developments in the region, Boroujerdi deplored the policy of the United States toward the Middle East, saying it has given rise to "unbridled growth" of terrorism in the region.

"The anti-Islamic State coalition, led by the US and (backed by) its regional allies, is a political show, which has not in practice been able to prevent the spread of terrorist and Takfiri groups," he noted. A Takfiri is a Muslim who accuses followers of some other Islamic sects of heresy.
