The country is at a critical juncture as it is engaged in sensitive dealings with the intentional community necessitating greater national unity, Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said in reference to Tehran's outreach to regional countries and a recent nuclear settlement with major powers.

"We need to maintain unity following the Leader and the ideals of the revolution as the country is faced with a critical situation in its international dealings," the top lawmaker said on Sunday in a speech to the first national congress to honor former prisoners of war captured during the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq War at Tehran's Vahdat Hall.

He said the economic situation is "difficult and unpleasant", underlining the need to take measures to encourage the young people to work hard to change the situation.

"The Leader's insistence on the resistance economy is the key in our path (to success), and we need to adhere to it."

The resistance economy is a set of guidelines proposed by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei to boost domestic production and reduce reliance on oil revenues, mainly to counter sanctions.

On the nuclear deal, Larijani said the achievement was the outcome of "the great Iranian people's resistance, who managed to compel the westerners to give in despite their pressure (campaign)."
