The head of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee has said Iran and some Latin American countries share similar views on various issues.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi made the remarks in a press briefing on Wednesday after returning from a two-leg Latin American tour which took him to Ecuador and Nicaragua. "The policies adopted by Ecuador and Nicaragua on various issues such as the fight against terrorists and appropriate solutions to the crises in Iraq and Syria are similar to those of Iran," IRNA quoted him as saying.

"The visits were made at the invitations of heads of the foreign policy committees in the two countries' parliaments," he added.

  Strategic Ties

The lawmaker stated that relations with Latin American countries have taken a different shape after the Islamic Revolution in 1979, especially over the past decade, adding, "The relations are strategic for Iran."

The senior lawmaker also said that Ecuador and Nicaragua are aligned with Iran on many international resolutions which gives us an edge in the international arena.

He described commercial, economic, and cultural relations with the two states as important and said, "Nicaragua and Ecuador along with Venezuela, Cuba, and Bolivia are the five Latin American member states of ALBA which constantly vote for Iran (in international events)."

The parliamentarian held separate meetings with foreign ministers and parliament speakers of both countries. Boroujerdi said Ecuadorian and Nicaraguan officials have invited Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani to visit their countries.
