The Guardian Council on Sunday declared unconstitutional the parliamentary bill envisaging that Majlis deputies represent provinces instead of cities, IRNA reported.

The council said the bill which was approved by Parliament on June 21 is in contravention of some articles of the Constitution.

It said the bill discriminates against religious and political associations in favor of political parties, adding that holding the parliamentary election at provincial level would cause religious, ethnic and tribal divisions, which would in turn undermine “national unity and solidarity.”

In addition, the body, which is tasked with vetting parliamentary bills and supervising elections, said the legislation would impose undue strain on public funds.
