Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi appeared before parliament on Tuesday to respond to questions posed by a number of lawmakers led by Javad Karimi-Qoddousi, who is known as a vocal critic of the government.

Speaking in an open session of parliament, Alavi elaborated on efforts made by the intelligence ministry to foil "enemies' plots" to destabilize the country.

He said, "Today, in view of widespread insecurity in the region, the successes and plans of the intelligence ministry are more tangible than ever," ISNA reported.

"Security forces have dealt a crushing blow to terror groups in eastern and southern parts of the country … significant quantities of explosives that were to be used in a holy city in the country were seized,… and over 130 members of terrorist Takfiri groups have been arrested," he said to give some examples of the intelligence ministry's efforts to protect the security of the country.
