Advisor to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution on international affairs Ali Akbar Velayati said Iran fully supports all governments in the region that are fighting terrorism, noting the Iranian people have been among the main victims of state-sponsored terrorism promoted by the West, especially after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
“Iran has proved successful in overcoming terrorism so far and today we witness the country has turned into a security hub in the region,” he said, expressing regret over the fact that some regional countries are grappling with state-sponsored terrorist activities, ISNA reported on Saturday.
Velayati said the support provided to terrorist groups by the US, the Zionist regime and some reactionary regional states in the form of financial aid and supply of arms has resulted in increased terrorist actions in the Middle East.
These governments, he said, try to present terrorists as legitimate groups, a fact which has led to the expansion of terrorism.
Referring to the second conference to commemorate 17,000 martyrs of terror scheduled to be held in August, the senior official said the event will provide an opportunity to introduce the real nature of terrorists to the world, adding that Iran has never missed a single opportunity in this respect ever since it was first exposed to terrorist attacks.
“Today we see the most disgraced terrorists in the world are the ones who conducted terror acts in Iran, who are now wandering around, being used as instruments by expansionists and colonialists.”
The director of the Center for Strategic Research of the Expediency Council advised the organizers of the conference to compare the current situation in the region to what the Islamic Republic has been through with a view to increasing the effectiveness of the meeting.
He underlined the need to introduce to the world Iran’s endeavors to defeat terrorism, saying the country’s achievements in fighting the phenomenon can serve as a model for other nations in the region.
Participation of influential people and intellectuals from regional countries in the event can create a good opportunity for sharing experience in combating terrorism, he added.
