Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has criticized the approach adopted in the region to combat terrorism.

He made the remarks during a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu on Thursday, in which the two officials discussed the latest developments in the region.

Zarif pointed to the discussions in the Turkish parliament on the country's involvement in the military campaign against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria and voiced concern over any action which makes the current circumstances in the region more complicated.

The foreign minister said, "The regional countries should feel responsible about the current conditions and help prevent the situation from being aggravated," IRNA reported.

Mevlut Cavusoglu, for his part, referred to the discussions in the Turkish parliament on possible military operations and said Turkey is committed to observing the territorial integrity and independence of the regional countries.

The Turkish parliament approved a motion on Thursday enabling the government to authorize cross-border military incursions into Iraq and Syria to battle Islamic State militants. The Turkish government had appealed to parliament to give it authority to perform military action beyond the country's borders for reasons, among which, countering terrorist threats against national security, preventing possible terrorist aggression, and safeguarding national interests.
