Syrian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Jihad al-Laham said fighting terrorism calls for “real resolve” at regional and international levels, however, he regretted that such a will is absent on the international scene.

“Despite (UN) resolutions… and the consensus reached on their approval, terrorism is still being supported and financed and is spreading all over the region,” he noted.

Laham, who has travelled to Iran at the head of a parliamentary delegation, made the remarks at a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Ali Larijani on Monday, IRNA reported.

“We will fight terrorism with all means and in our battle we will rely on our resilient nation, our heroic army and our allies, primarily the Islamic Republic of Iran,” said the Arab official.

Turning to the stance of regional states on the situation in Syria, he said, “We constantly assess the developments in the region, and the cruel war imposed on Syria.” Praising Iran’s backing for his country, the Syrian speaker said the support has influenced the Syrian nation in a positive way, especially in a situation where some Arab states of the region imposed shameful economic sanctions on the crisis-hit country.

“Such sanctions and punishment against the Syrian nation has in effect targeted the people’s lives,” he noted.

Laham said Tehran and Damascus have always been and will remain to be a “stabilizing factor” in the region, acting as a defensive wall against the wave of sanctions.

Larijani, for his part, stressed Tehran plays its role in fighting terrorism by supporting regional states which are directly exposed to terrorist threats.

“Over the past four years, some powerful countries sought to cause problems for Syria by boosting terrorist movements,” he said, adding that the Syrian people have managed, to a great extent, to counter the plots of these “adventurous” militants.

Criticizing the countries that support terrorism in Syria, Larijani lamented that they are also backing terrorists in Iraq. He warned against the spread of terrorism, saying the phenomenon does not concern a single country, but is a threat to humanity.

The senior lawmaker reassured that “the Syrian nation will emerge victorious” in the battle against terrorists.
