Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia and Pacific Affairs Ebrahim Rahimpour has said reaching an agreement on the boundaries of the Caspian Sea littoral states’ sovereign territories based on Tehran’s proposal at the recent Caspian summit in Astrakhan was “one of the most important steps taken” toward the adoption of a convention on the legal status of the sea. Based on the agreement, 15 nautical miles from the baselines of the coastal states are territorial waters and 10 nautical miles after territorial waters are exclusive fishing zones and the rest of the sea is regarded as common territory, he explained in an interview with IRNA on Wednesday.
