The foreign ministry spokesperson wished success for the newly appointed UN special envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, calling on him to do his best to help defuse the Yemen crisis.
“We hope (UN) Secretary-General (Ban Ki-moon’s) newly appointed envoy to Yemen will take effective steps to help put an end to the military operation against Yemen and establish dialogue among Yemeni factions and parties,” IRNA quoted Marzieh Afkham as saying in a statement on Tuesday.
Describing the Saudi aggression against Houthi fighters as a “great mistake” and “miscalculation”, she reiterated Iran’s stance on the issue, saying, “The Islamic Republic of Iran deeply believes that Yemen’s crisis can only be resolved by diplomatic means based on dialogue among the Yemenis to form an inclusive government.”
“Preventing further complication of the situation is considered an important step toward the resolution of the crisis.”
Underlining the importance of the delivery of vital humanitarian aid to the Yemeni nation, he urged that Cheikh Ahmed try to coordinate efforts in this relation more effectively. He replaced Jamal Benomar of the United Kingdom, who stepped down from the post two weeks ago.
