Afghan President Ashraf Ghani was due to arrive in Tehran today for a two-day visit at the head of a high-ranking delegation at the invitation of President Hassan Rouhani.

Ghani and his accompanying delegation are scheduled to hold meetings with top-level Iranian officials to explore ways to increase bilateral cooperation and exchange views on the latest regional and international developments, IRNA reported.

The trip had been arranged for February, but it was called off because of deadly avalanches hitting the northeastern Afghan province of Panjshir at the time.

The cancelled visit was supposed to witness the signing of a strategic security pact between the neighboring countries on further cooperation in the campaign against terrorism and drug trafficking.

However, there has been no mention by Afghan officials of any intention to raise the issue of the security pact during this visit.

The pact had been proposed by senior Iranian officials during the tenure of former Afghan president Hamid Karzai.
