Meeting in Spain

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was expected to arrive in Madrid today to hold talks with Spanish officials on bilateral ties, nuclear talks, and international issues, IRNA reported.

Zarif is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo and President of the Congress of Deputies Jes?s Posada, among other top-level officials.

The trip is Zarif’s first European visit since Iran and the major powers reached a landmark preliminary nuclear agreement on April 2 after eight days of intensive talks in the Swiss city of Lausanne.

Spain was elected by the UN General Assembly as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for a two-year term last January. It now chairs the Security Council committee overseeing Iran sanctions.

Under the Lausanne agreement, the Security Council would adopt a resolution to endorse a prospective nuclear deal, which would terminate the sanctions.
