The United States appealed to Tehran to cooperate in the search for Robert Levinson, a former FBI agent who the US says disappeared in Iran eight years ago. “We ask the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran to work cooperatively with us on the investigation into Robert Levinson’s disappearance so we can ensure his safe return,” US Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement issued on Monday, Reuters reported.  Levinson reportedly disappeared from Kish Island, a resort in the Persian Gulf, on March 9, 2007, while on a business trip as a private investigator. His friends said he had been investigating illicit trafficking in cigarettes, mainly in Latin America.

Iranian authorities have repeatedly denied knowing Levinson’s whereabouts.
