Leader Appoints New Police Chief

In a decree issued on Monday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei appointed Lieutenant General Hossein Ashtari as new police chief.

In his decree, the Leader extended his gratitude to former police chief Lieutenant General Esmaeil Ahmadi Moqaddam for his services during his 10-year tenure.

Part of the decree reads, "It is necessary that the effective measures taken by Lieutenant General Ahmadi Moqaddam to strengthen border security, increase road safety, reduce car accidents and establish social security and peace be pursued," IRNA reported.   

"The three branches of government (and organizations), particularly the interior ministry, Supreme National Security Council, Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), office of the chairman of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, and Management and Planning Organization, are expected to provide the police with material and moral support," the decree writes.
