In a meeting with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in Baghdad on Tuesday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said Iran plays an “effective” role in the campaign against terrorism in the region, underlining the need for increased cooperation between regional countries to deal with the challenge, IRNA reported.  Abadi pointed to Iran’s assistance to Iraq in its fight against terrorists and urged the continuation of cooperation between the two countries in this regard.  Elsewhere, he touched on the US sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program and said the “unjust” sanctions should be lifted as they harm people.  Zarif, for his part, assured the Iraqi official that Iran will not stop backing the mainly Arab country in the fight against terrorism.
