Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi arrived in Tehran on Monday afternoon for talks with Iranian top officials.
He was received by his Iranian counterpart before attending a meeting of the two countries’ delegations, ISNA reported.
Oman has a history of mediation in international disputes, including over Iran’s nuclear program which resulted in the signing of the nuclear deal in 2015.
It has also acted as intermediary in negotiations to revive the agreement that is now unraveling after the United States’ unilateral exit.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani had earlier in the day described Oman as a good partner of the Islamic Republic which has always had a positive role in regional problems.
He said Iran would use the capacities of friendly countries which are interested in helping forge an agreement on Iran’s nuclear issue.
“Iran will welcome such a constructive approach,” he said at a press briefing.
The spokesman also noted that negotiations are still underway and the issue can be pursued through that diplomatic course.
“Iran has repeatedly announced that the talks can be concluded on the basis of previous discussions in the short term and it is the US which must show its determination in this regard.”
