Tehran is expected to be hit by a heavy storm of dust from Monday lasting until Wednesday as per the announcement of the Iran Meteorological Organization.
The region extended a yellow alert for heavy air pollution across the province and urged those suffering from chronic respiratory diseases to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities for the time being, head of Tehran’s crisis management unit, Hamzeh Yazdimehr, was quoted as saying by IRNA on Sunday evening.
The sandstorms are expected to arrive by strong winds from Semnan Province, Yazdimehr added.
“We continue to advise people to avoid heights during this time. We ask people not to park their cars near trees,” the official said.
He also urged owners of construction sites and billboards to take precautions so as to avert possible tragedies as the winds can easily carry loose objects into the air.
Sandstorms in Iran have taken a heavy toll on the country’s infrastructure and health system and millions are affected by the dangerous particles every year, especially during spring and summer.
The unprecedented number of dust storms that struck the nation last year prompted authorities to raise awareness about the seasonal ordeal and collaborate with regional nations to fight the environmental problem as a united front.
