A European Union senior diplomat said that for the bloc, Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal is “the best possible”, if not the only, framework to address the non-proliferation concerns of the international community on the Iranian nuclear program.
EU deputy foreign policy chief Enrique Mora made the remarks in a tweet after a series of talks with Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Baqeri Kani this week.
The landmark deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, unraveled when the United States withdrew unilaterally in 2018 and reimposed tough sanctions on Tehran, which reacted by scaling down its commitments.
EU-coordinated talks began in early 2021 to revive the JCPOA, but have been stalled since last August, although the exchange of messages has been underway between the two sides through intermediaries.
In the latest move, Mora and Baqeri Kani held talks in the Qatari capital Doha, on a range of issues, including the JCPOA.
Mora described the talks as “intense”, and Baqeri Kani said the meeting was “serious and constructive.”
Along the same line, the Iranian diplomat had also earlier met his counterparts from France, Germany and Britain, the three European parties to the JCPOA, in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates, last week.
