A member of parliament strongly denounced the recent operation by the Turkish military in Syrian territory.
"The Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee vehemently condemns Turkey's military action which violated Syria's territorial integrity," ICANA reported Hossein Naqavi Hosseini as saying.
"Turkey's recent military action against Syria goes against international law and the governments' responsibility to respect the territorial integrity of other states."
Naqavi Hosseini also said the Turkish military intrusion into Syria on "baseless excuses" causes instability in the region, adding that the move not only does not help efforts to tackle the Syrian crisis and the campaign against terrorism, but "it aggravates the situation in Syria and encourages terrorist actions".
The spokesperson for the Majlis committee noted that Syria reserves the right to take measures in response to Turkey's aggression, expressing hope that international organizations would take the necessary legal action against violation of the territorial integrity of countries. Turkish forces swept into Syria overnight on February 22 to rescue about 40 soldiers who had been surrounded for months by Islamic State terrorists while guarding the tomb of a revered Turkish figure, Reuters reported.
The Syrian government described the operation as an act of "flagrant aggression" and said it would hold Ankara responsible for its repercussions. The action, which involved tanks, drones and reconnaissance planes as well as several hundred ground troops, was the first incursion by Turkish troops into Syria since the start of the civil war there nearly four years ago.
The soldiers who had been guarding the tomb of Suleyman Shah, grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman Empire, were brought safely home in Turkey.
