Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq al-Said will travel to Iran on Sunday at the head of high-ranking delegation for a two-day visit, according to a statement issued by the sultanate’s Diwan of Royal Court on Wednesday.
“[The] visit comes within the context of the continuous consultation and coordination between the two leaderships to discuss various developments at the reginal and international arenas,” the statement read, Times of Oman reported.
It added that the trip is planned in response to an official invitation by President Ebrahim Raisi.
The Omani Sultan is travelling to Tehran after his visit to Egypt last Sunday, where discussed with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi “the overall regional and international developments.”
Reports suggested that the Sultan was aiming to play mediator between Tehran and Cairo during the trip.
Relations between Egypt and Iran have been strained in recent decades although the two countries have maintained diplomatic contacts.
Oman had earlier acted as intermediary between Iran and Saudi Arabia, which eventually led to their normalization in March in a deal brokered by China.
Both Tehran and Cairo have shown signs of interest in reestablishing full diplomatic relations in recent months.
