Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman censured Germany’s top diplomat for expressing concern about human rights in Iran while the Berlin government is responsible for the suffering of Iranian victims of chemical weapons in the 1980s.
“It is unlikely that the German foreign minister is not aware of the Iranian people’s mentality about gases and chemical substances and their relation to Germany’s government,” Nasser Kanaani wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.
He highlighted that Germany is responsible for equipping former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein with chemical warfare in its eight-year war on Iran, which led to the martyrdom and poisoning of thousands of Iranian nationals.
“How does she … give herself the right to talks about the human rights of Iranian people?” he said, attaching pictures of the aftermath of Iraq’s chemical bombardment of the Iranian city of Sardasht on June 28, 1987.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock flagged the European Union’s new sanctions before they were officially announced on Monday.
She referred to what she called a “violation of human rights” and claimed, “We won’t accept this."
Western countries accuse Iran of cracking down on protesters during last year’s unrest.
