Iran has denounced accusations made by financial ministers of the Group of Seven advanced economies, calling on them to stop following the United States’ sanctions instead of bringing baseless charges against the Islamic Republic.
“We strongly condemn that part of the G7 finance ministers’ statement that makes a completely baseless and delusional accusation against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said, IRNA reported.
He censured the G7 with its limited number of members for trying to impose their wishes on international multilateral mechanisms through outdated and selective methods.
“We urge [G7 states] to stop their deplorable practice of appeasing and complicity with US illegal sanctions which violate the fundamental principles of International law and human rights against the great nation of Iran,” he said.
Instead of sharing and approving unilateral and unjust positions, members of this group must be held accountable to the decent people of Iran and international community for such clear violations and measures in contravention of international regulations, the diplomat added.
The G7 is an intergovernmental political forum consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain and the US.
Its finance ministers and central bank governors claimed in a statement on May 13 that they were concerned about “illicit financing risk emanating from Iran.”
The group was passive when the US reimposed tough sanctions on Tehran after unilaterally withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
The JCPOA had lifted international sanctions on Tehran in return for curbs on the country’s nuclear program.
