Iran’s determination will not waver in the face of the United States’ meddling in its affairs, as American sanctions and threats did not force it into surrender, a senior diplomat said, following the US president’s recent meddlesome remarks about riots in Iran.
“Your habit is to fish in troubled waters, but remember this is Iran, the land of honorable men and women,” Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani wrote on his Instagram page.
Iran has experienced unrest in recent weeks following the death of a young girl in police custody.
Some western countries, including the US, expressed support for rioters and accused the Iranian government of widespread crackdown.
US President Joe Biden told reporters during a campaign trip on Saturday that the Iranian government was “so oppressive” and that he was surprised by the courage of the Iranian protesters.
Earlier on Friday, he said he was “stunned” by the mass protests and that he stood by the citizens of Iran.
“It stunned me what it awakened in Iran. It awakened something that I don’t think will be quieted for a long, long time,” he said at a college in Irvine, California, AP reported.
He also said Iran “has to end the violence against its own citizens simply exercising their fundamental rights.”
Kanaani described Biden’s remarks as “meddlesome”, criticizing him for supporting the turmoil in Iran repeatedly.
“Since he has neither trusted advisors, nor a good memory, I remind him that Iran was too strong and sturdy to surrender with your cruel sanctions and empty threats,” he said.
“Now also, it is too noble to lose its will with interference and expression of surprise by a politician who is tired of years of fruitless action against Iran,” he stressed.
Authorities in Iran have blamed the US and other allies of whipping up the protests to destabilize the Islamic Republic.
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said the unrest was a plot by the enemies to impede Iran’s progress, blaming the US, Israel and their hired hands.

Pile of Failures

Kanaani said neither Biden’s remarks, nor the US meddling would surprise Iran because interference, aggression and killing are the true nature of the US system.
Since the 1953 Iranian coup, the anti-Iran policies of the US government have stuck in the minds of Iranians, while the rest of the world also bear wound of the US crimes and violence, according to the diplomat.
He was referring to the coup, orchestrated by the US and Britain, that overthrew the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh in favor of strengthening the monarchical rule of the Shah.
“But we are the people of history and have our roots in the depths of history,” he said.
Kanaani said in conclusion that Iranians will talk and work together to heal the country’s small and big wounds.
“We will stand together for Iran’s independence and will certainly add another failure to your pile of failures.”
The United States, Canada and Britain have already imposed sanctions on Iranian officials and entities over the developments.
European Union countries also on Wednesday agreed to level new sanctions on the Islamic republic over what they called “crackdown”.
The move is due to be endorsed at the bloc’s foreign ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg on Monday.
“We recommend that Europeans look at the issue with a realistic approach,” Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian told EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell in a phone call Friday.
In the event of issuing a resolution or imposing sanctions, “Iran will take reciprocal action”, the minister said in a separate phone call with his Portuguese counterpart.
