Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei issued a message on Saturday to express sympathy with the people affected by the recent devastating floods and extend condolences to the families of victims.
He also called on officials to take the required measures to repair the damage caused by the natural disaster, leader.ir reported.
Flash floods and landslides throughout the country have killed 59 people and left 30 missing since last week, the secretary-general of the Iranian Red Crescent Society, Yaghoub Soleimani, earlier in the day.
Triggered by heavy rain, the floods have taken the lives of residents from a number of provinces, including Tehran, Lorestan, Sistan-Baluchestan, Kerman and Yazd, IRNA reported.
At least 30 are still missing in the provinces Tehran, Mazandaran, Lorestan and Kerman, an update by the Iranian Red Crescent Society showed.
Noting that 60 cities are grappling with a summer deluge, Soleimani added, “Some 60 counties, 516 villages and 85 roads have been affected by the floods.”
The Society has provided relief to more than 27,000 since last week and search and rescue efforts are expected to continue until all missing people are found.
Thousands of Iranians have been displaced since last week as heavy flash floods hit the country.
