European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell was expected to arrive in Tehran on Friday for consultations with Iran’s foreign minister and other top authorities.
The two-day visit is part of the ongoing efforts to bring the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, back to full implementation, according to a statement by the European External Action Service.
“The High Representative, acting in his capacity as coordinator of the JCPOA, will hold meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other relevant Iranian counterparts,” the statement said.
Borrell has been shuttling between Iran and the United States to resolve the deadlock in talks to revive the landmark agreement which offered sanctions relief to Iran in return for curbs on its nuclear program.
The US pulled out of the deal in 2018 and Iran scaled down its commitments in response to Washington’s reimposition of sweeping sanctions.
Negotiations have been underway since April 2021 in the Austrian capital Vienna to bring the agreement back to life by working out how both sides can resume compliance.
Despite agreement over the majority of issues, the talks have been stalled since March over a few remaining differences.
