Former vice president Mohammad Reza Rahimi was taken to jail after he was sentenced to more than five years in prison over corruption charges.

Police officers went to the residence of Rahimi, who served as first vice president under Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, in Tehran on Sunday and transferred him to Evin Prison, Press TV reported.

An Iranian court in January sentenced Rahimi to five years and three months in prison. The court also imposed a fine of 362,000 dollars on Rahimi.

He was ordered to return over one million dollars he had acquired through illegal means.

The sentence came into force after it was upheld by the Supreme Court, which rejected Rahimi’s appeal.

A court of first instance had initially handed down a 15-year prison sentence to Rahimi, but the Supreme Court commuted the term.
