Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in a phone call on Sunday evening with President Ebrahim Raisi stressed his country’s commitment to extend relations with Iran in the wake of extensive negotiations recently held between the two neighboring nations.
“We believe that your trip, in line with boosting and strengthening brotherly ties, played an important role [in improvement of relations],” the emir was quoted as saying by President.ir.
He also expressed delight that Iran qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the Arab state from November 21 to December 18.
He said, “We’ll warmly welcome our brothers. Iran’s been placed in an epic group and we’ll certainly watch some exciting matches.”
Qatar’s ruling emir noted that his Minister of Transport and Communications Jassim bin Saif Al Sulaitie will soon meet his Iranian counterpart on the nearby Kish Island to discuss details of cooperation during the World Cup.
Tehran has long showed interest in helping Doha hold the next World Cup. The 2022 World Cup is the first to take place in winter instead of summer, due to extreme heat in the region in the traditional summer window.
Raisi in turn congratulated the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan and said that the two countries can establish regional stability and security by activating all potentials in bilateral ties.
“Tehran welcomes expanding relations with Doha in different sectors and maintains that it is in the interest of both nations,” the president said.
The top official pointed to the emir’s approaching visit to Tehran and stated that important decisions will be made during the upcoming trip.
According to Raisi, Iran is prepared to assist Qatar in the 2022 World Cup by providing resources from its islands located in the Persian Gulf, especially tourist sites like Kish.
The Kish Island is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the Middle East.
