The former UN nuclear agency chief criticized the West for adopting double standards toward Iran’s nuclear program.

Mohamed ElBaradei said the policy that “some are more equal than others” does not work, adding, “Some countries are keeping their weapons” while telling others “you cannot even touch the knowledge of nuclear technology,” the New Zealand news website Scoop reported.

“Why do we continue to believe that we can continue to rely on nuclear weapons, and be surprised that other countries will eventually go and get them?”

ElBaradei made the remarks during a presentation last week in Bangkok at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate went on to say that Iran is not engaged in nuclear weapons research and “anybody who is calling for a military solution for the Iranian (nuclear) issue is crazy, because (by a military action against Iran) you will get a much worse situation than what you have,” ElBaradei said.

He also pointed to the nuclear arsenal of Israel and said, “Israel is not party to the nuclear proliferation treaty. They keep this policy of ambiguity. But still, everybody takes it that they do have it.”
