Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi expressed hope in his meeting with President Ebrahim Raisi on Wednesday that the top official’s upcoming trip to Muscat could serve mutual interests and benefit regional and international security.
“There are excellent relations between Iran and Oman which are historically based on mutual trust, respect and cooperation,” he was quoted as saying by President.ir.
Albusaidi handed over Sultan Haitham bin Tariq al-Said’s official invitation letter to Raisi on Wednesday afternoon during his trip to Tehran.
He noted, “Your visit to Oman will certainly be a historic trip that can secure both nations’ goals.”
The diplomat lauded Raisi’s practical approach to international relations and said he seeks to adopt the president’s approach to bilateral ties.
Raisi in turn thanked Sultan’s official invitation for a trip to Muscat and added, “These relations can, without a doubt, be effective in strengthening bilateral ties and solving regional and international issues.”
Highlighting Muscat’s different attitude toward regional countries, he said, “Oman’s attention to Palestine, Yemen and regional problems is noteworthy.”
The top official stressed the need for more economic ties with the neighboring nation and reiterated his administration’s priorities in foreign relations.
“The policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran is to expand cooperation with friendly countries, especially Oman,” he said, adding that there is significant potential in trade and economic relations.
New Chapter
Albusaidi was welcomed by his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian upon arrival on Wednesday morning and the top diplomats discussed regional and international issues before the meeting with Raisi.
During a joint press conference after his meeting with Amir-Abdollahian, Albusaidi stated, “It is an honor to hand over Omani Sultan’s letter to President Raisi.”
Sultan Haitham was sworn into office in January 2021. Iranian and Omani officials have been meeting regularly over the past few months to boost bilateral relations.
After taking the reign, the Sultan had promised to continue in his predecessor’s footsteps as a regional mediator.
Albusaidi hoped that Raisi’s trip to Muscat would take place sooner than later to “usher in a new chapter” in relations between the neighboring countries.
He pointed to a joint economic commission that was held earlier in Muscat and said his ministry is making efforts to execute the terms of the agreement.
Amir-Abdollahian also mentioned regional issues in Afghanistan and Yemen and highlighted the role of bilateral ties in promoting security and stability in the Middle East.
