Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani called for enhanced ties with Iran and increased cooperation on regional issues.
In a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Doha on Tuesday, Sheikh Tamim underscored the importance of bilateral relations and said his country is interested in expansion of ties with Tehran, IRNA reported.
During the meeting, Amir-Abdollahian also pointed to the Iranian administration’s foreign policy to strengthen ties with neighboring nations by utilizing opportunities that can benefit both countries as well as the region.
The top diplomat had made a one-day visit to Muscat the day before to discuss ties and regional issues with Omani officials.
Upon arrival in Doha, Amir-Abdollahian told reporters, “In this trip I will discuss bilateral, international and regional topics with Qatar’s emir and my counterpart.”
The official noted that both trips to Oman and Qatar aimed to boost relations with regional countries.
Following his meeting with Sheikh Tamim, Amir-Abdollahian met with Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to talk about bilateral and multilateral cooperation among regional countries.
The officials discussed the latest developments in Yemen and Afghanistan and the Vienna talks to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
Iran rolled back on its JCPOA commitments after the United States unilaterally reneged on the accord in 2018.
The nuclear agreement was a major talking point in both trips to Oman and Qatar as a way to stabilize the region and de-escalate tensions in the Middle-East.
Amir-Abdollahian also announced to Qatari officials that Iran is ready to assist with efforts to host the FIFA World Cup in late 2022.
Pointing to past talks about the World Cup, the top diplomat highlighted Iran’s capacity to offer technical services and equipment.
In a third meeting held on the same day, the foreign minister held talks with Ismail Haniyeh, head of Hamas’s political division in Doha.
