President Ebrahim Raisi is expected to travel to Moscow in the early days of the New Year, following an invitation by his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
“In line with Iran-Russia strategic ties, Mr. Putin invited our president to have a trip to Russia which will be taken early next year,” Government Spokesman Ali Bahadori Jahromi said at a press briefing on Tuesday, adding that Raisi’s political deputy is finalizing the arrangements.
He said the visit is in the framework of the administration’s policy of expanding bilateral and multilateral relations, primarily with regional states, with a focus on boosting economic and trade cooperation, IRNA reported.
Putin had earlier expressed hope that his invitation would be accepted by Raisi, saying Russia would give Iran details of how the dialogue with the United States on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal is going on.
“We’ll continue discussing this subject during the possible visit by the Iranian president to Russia early next year,” he had said earlier this month.
Russia is a party to the deal that the US quit and Iran stepped away from in response, and is now acting as intermediary, together with the other remaining parties, to help work out a way for both Washington and Tehran to resume full compliance.
