At least 22 people were injured when two commuter trains collided on Wednesday morning near Chitgar metro station located between the capital Tehran and the nearby metropolis Karaj.
An early morning passenger train slammed into the side of an express train when it derailed for as of yet unknown reasons at seven a.m. at Vardavard, ISNA reported.
Eleven of those wounded were transported to hospital for further care. One of the passengers is in critical condition.
Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi instructed governors general of provinces Tehran and Alborz to provide all the necessary healthcare support for those hurt in the accident.
Mayor of Tehran Alireza Zakani visited the location of the incident and ordered city buses to carry passengers to destinations free of charge until the trains in Line 5 could resume operations.
Head of the Tehran Urban & Suburban Railway Co., Mahdi Shayesteh-Asl, made a public apology following the collision.
“I apologize to all the citizens who were injured and those who were late to work,” he said.
The official added, “This proves more than ever the need for the upgrade and overhaul of signaling systems and the integration of all train lines’ commanding centers.”
The company suggested that Line 5 can reopen before sunset to offer services to commuters during rush hour.
Shayesteh-Asl noted, “Two-thirds of the operation to transport the cars back onto the rails has been completed, the necessary equipment has arrived at the scene.”
Some 18 passengers were rescued from train cars by firefighters.
According to Zakani, five or six people were injured during the incident and the rest were hurt when mayhem broke out as passengers tried to evacuate the trains.
