Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has traveled to Baku to exchange views with high-ranking officials of neighboring Azerbaijan on regional developments and ways to expand bilateral relations.
Heading a delegation, Amir-Abdollahian left Tehran for Baku on Wednesday morning for his first trip to the Azeri capital since assuming the post of foreign minister, ISNA reported.
On Sunday, the top Iranian diplomat met with his Azeri counterpart, Jeyhun Bayramov, on the sidelines of the 17th extraordinary session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Council of Foreign Ministers in Islamabad, Pakistan.
During the meeting, the two sides expressed satisfaction with the growing trend of Tehran-Baku ties.
On November 27, the two foreign ministers met in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, where they were present to participate at the 15th summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization.
Amir-Abdollahian described his meeting with Bayramov as positive and friendly, saying Iran and Azerbaijan are relatives beyond being neighbors.
Earlier this year, tensions soared between the two countries, which share a 700-kilometer border, after Azerbaijan seized a border strip with Iran that had been under Armenia’s control and created problems for Iranian truck transportation.
Iran has also raised concerns about border security amid Azerbaijan’s close military cooperation with the Israeli regime.
