Iran on Monday reported its lowest overnight death toll since May 2020 as 42 patients lost their lives to the coronavirus and 14 provinces logged zero fatalities.
The new deaths took the national toll to 130,764, IRNA reported.
Over the past 24 hours, Tehran Province registered the highest number of mortalities (11), followed by East Azarbaijan (4) and Kerman (4).
Data collected by the Health Ministry showed that in the past ten days, 118 individuals contracted the disease and three died from it every hour.
Experts attribute the sharp drop in daily cases and deaths to high vaccination coverage rates. Over 58.7 million people have been administered a first dose and some 49.5 million have been fully vaccinated.
The ministry gave out 505,000 vaccine shots in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of shots administered to more than 111 million.
Majority of Iran’s population of 85 million people have been inoculated with the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine.
Italian Ambassador Giuseppe Perrone announced on Twitter on Monday that a shipment containing over one million jabs of the AstraZeneca vaccine had arrived in Tehran.
According to the diplomat, the new batch takes the number of vaccines donated by Italy to 2.225 million.
“Another sign of solidarity and friendship, from the Italian people to Iranians,” the tweet said.
Iran also registered 2,700 new cases of the coronavirus on Monday, bringing the tally of cases to 6.157 million.
Around the world, so far 270.5 million people have caught the dangerous virus and 5.3 million have lost their lives to it.
