The secretary general of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization said there is no limitation or opposition to Iran’s permanent membership in SCO. In an interview with IRNA in Beijing on Tuesday, Dmitry Mezentsev said SCO welcomes Iran’s membership and all members of the organization support Iran’s full membership.
He underlined that Iran is a large country and has the required potential to change its position in the body from observer statute to full membership. “We believe presence of powerful partners, like Iran, will play a key role in strengthening SCO policies,” he noted. He invited Iran to attend the upcoming summit of the organization in Russia in March 2015, which is set to discuss admission of new members, among other issues.
