Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Tuesday Iran welcomes increased foreign relations which are founded on mutual respect and common interests.

Speaking at a gathering of foreign ambassadors and diplomats held in Tehran on the occasion of the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the foreign minister said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran, firmly and with self-confidence and relying on its people, seeks relations (with other countries) on the basis of mutual respect and common interests and the world also welcomes this effort,” IRNA reported.

He described the 37th year of the establishment of the Islamic Republic as the year of cooperation, interaction, dialogue and participation with the aim of brining a better future for the region and the whole world.

The senior diplomat reiterated, “Today we are faced with various opportunities and challenges, such as violence, extremism and misuse of people’s beliefs, on the one hand, and the disrespect for the societies’ sanctities and values, on the other hand.”

The diplomat referred to Iran’s proposal to the UN General Assembly regarding the necessity to combat violence and extremism and expressed hope that the world’s countries would take joint action on such challenges.
