Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian arrived in Damascus on Sunday after a trip to Iraq.
The top Iranian diplomat traveled to Damascus to hold meetings with Syrian officials, including Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad, ISNA reported.
Syria is Amir-Abdollahian’s second destination after his appointment as the new Iranian foreign minister.
The Iranian diplomat has traveled to Syria after a visit to Iraq, where he attended the Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership, a summit with the objective of calming regional tensions.
Before leaving Tehran for Baghdad on Saturday, Amir-Abdollahian complained that Syria had not been invited to the summit, saying, “However, we are in contact and hold consultations with Syria’s leadership about the region’s security and sustainable development.”
The Iranian foreign minister also said that Tehran will hold “direct consultations with Damascus” about the Baghdad summit, highlighting the significant role of regional countries in any regional initiative.
