The Iranian parliament voted on Wednesday to approve all but one of President Ebrahim Raeisi’s Cabinet nominees, after he appeared before the legislature to defend his picks.
In total, 286 votes were cast for each candidate at a session chaired by Majlis Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf.
Lawmakers gave a vote of confidence to 18 out of 19 nominees, namely Hossein Amir-Abdollahian (Foreign Ministry), Isa Zarepour (ICT Ministry), Esmaeil Khatib (Intelligence Ministry), Ehsan Khandouzi (Economy Ministry), Bahram Einollahi (Health Ministry), Hojjat Abdolmaleki (Labor Ministry), Javad Sadatinejad (Agriculture Ministry), Mohammad Reza Qaraei Ashtiani (Defense Ministry), Amin Hossein Rahimi (Justice Ministry), Rostam Qasemi (Roads and Urban Development Ministry), Reza Fatemi Amin (Industry Ministry), Mohammad Ali Zolfigol (Science Ministry), Mohammad Mehdi Esmaeili (Culture Ministry), Ahmad Vahidi (Interior Ministry), Ezzatollah Zarghami (Tourism Ministry), Javad Owji (Oil Ministry), Ali Akbar Mehrabian (Energy Ministry) and Hamid Sajjadi (Sports Ministry).
Hossein Baghgoli failed to gain approval from the parliament for the post of education minister, with 193 lawmakers voting against his nomination.
Amin Hossein Rahimi gained the most overwhelming approval for the Justice Ministry with 277 votes in favor while Hamid Sajjadi just scraped through with the fewest number of confirmation votes, as only 165 legislators approved his qualification for the Sports Ministry.
The Majlis had been debating the proposed ministers since Saturday, reviewing the last four candidates in the Wednesday morning session prior to voting.
Raeisi has three months to introduce a replacement for Baghgoli who was rejected. Until then the Education Ministry will be in the hands of a caretaker.
