The Health Ministry gave out a record 764,000 vaccine shots in one single day as authorities scurry to identify and immunize those most at risk of the coronavirus.
Iran has ramped up vaccine rollout over the past month to reduce the number of severe cases and deaths. On Tuesday, the country logged an all-time high of 709 fatalities driven by the highly contagious Delta variant, IRNA reported.
So far, more than 17.5 million people have received a first dose of a Covid vaccine and 6.9 million people have been vaccinated, bringing the tally of shots administered to 24.4 million.
The Health Ministry is currently inoculating those most vulnerable to the contagion, people over the age of 50, those working at high-risk jobs and individuals living with pre-existing conditions or rare diseases.
The boost to the national vaccination campaign came from the Iranian Red Crescent Society which has managed to import two vaccine shipments a week for the past weeks.
Most Iranians have been given the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine. According to one study carried out in Peru, Sinopharm is 93% effective at preventing death after two doses.
Iran began vaccinating its population of 85 million people in February. The country is expected to vaccinate all people over the age of 18 by March 2022.
